Who Should I Name on My Auto Insurance Policy?

What to know about naming additional drivers on your auto policy.

When you go to secure auto insurance, your insurance provider will ask you to name all licensed drivers living under your roof.  But do you really need to cover all these drivers?  And are there any other people you should list on your policy?  Here's what you need to know about naming additional drivers on your auto policy.

  • Who to List

Generally, all licensed drivers living under your roof should be listed on your auto insurance policy.  This is because, even though these drivers do not regularly drive your car, they could.  So, all licensed drivers, including teens, elderly adults, roommates, and significant others, should be listed on your insurance policy.  You do not have to list children for coverage.  However, once your child receives their drivers license, they will need to be officially named.

  • How This Affects Your Premiums

Adding a new driver to your auto insurance policy may cause your premiums to increase.  This is because newly licensed drivers are considered risky to insure.  Additionally, adding someone with a bad driving record can also cause your insurance rates to increase.  If you are worried about this rate increase, then you do have an option.  You can choose to list the high-risk driver as an excluded driver.  This means that the individual is not permitted to drive your car under any circumstances.  If the excluded driver does get into an accident while operating your vehicle, then your insurance provider will refuse coverage for the event.

  • Do You Need to List Other Drivers?

If you are lending your car to someone who lives outside of your household, such as a neighbor or friend, then you do not need to list these individuals on your insurance policy.  In this case, your existing coverage will automatically extend to anyone borrowing your car, so long as you have given them explicit permission to do so. This is what you need to know about naming additional drivers on your auto policy.  Do you have other questions about your car insurance?  If so, then contact the experts at John E.
